The Yu Lab has developed dendritic cell-vaccine-based immunotherapy for brain tumors that has led to multi-institutional, randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials.
About the Role
Working under direct supervision, the incumbent performs a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of one or more laboratory research projects in a specific area of research. The RA I member assists in general laboratory activities, including maintenance of reagents and stocking of supplies, files and monitors documents, and keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results. The Associate assists in the operation of specialized equipment and machinery, observes safety standards and procedures. The incumbent will perform routine cellular, micro- and molecular biology procedures including, but not limited to Western, Northern blot, DNA/RNA, PCR, protein extraction, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, and staining. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- May assist with animal husbandry.
- Maintains lab equipment and related records.
- Transports, processes and logs samples.
- Maintains computer database with relevant clinical information.
- Performs lab maintenance duties, including glassware cleaning and sterilization.
- Maintains stocks of general lab materials, and places orders for supplies.
- Assists new students and fellows at the laboratory.
Department-Specific Duties:
- Performs tasks related to histology technique (tissue collection, fixing, tissue processing, paraffin embedding and sectioning).
- Performs tasks related to PCR (genotyping, etc.), semi- and full-quantitative PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blot, ELISA, Flow cytometry, protein isolation and preservation, cell culture techniques, RNA/DNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, basic and advanced optical imaging and microscopy, tissue processing, use immunohistochemical, histochemical and immunocytochemical staining methods, fluorescent labeling, stereology, software analysis, cell counting, passaging of cells, monoclonal antibody production from Hybridoma cell lines, animal model handling and colony maintenance, tagging for identification and genotyping.
- Prepares buffer, stock reagents, solution, etc.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a Science related, required.
- Master's degree in Biomedical Science or Neurology, preferred.
Experience and Skills:
- Understanding of general research objectives.
- Solid understanding of database management, personal computers, and presentation/imaging software.
- Experience with routine laboratory procedures, experimental protocols, and overall lab organization is preferred.
- Computer literacy, specifically, with Excel and Word.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds as well as stand and sit for long periods using computer and other laboratory equipment.
